8 April 2025 – ChargeNet has officially reopened its upgraded Kaikōura site — now one of New Zealand’s most advanced EV charging sites. The reopening is the result of a collaboration between ChargeNet and Foodstuffs South Island, with the site strategically located at New World Kaikōura, just north of the town centre on State Highway 1. The site plays a critical role in supporting both tourism and freight routes along the South Island’s iconic east coast.

The redeveloped hub features three 300kW hyperchargers, each with two CCS and one CHAdeMO plug, allowing up to six vehicles to charge at once. Two pull-through bays have been designed to accommodate trailers, campervans, and large vehicles, ensuring ease of access for long-haul drivers and tourists.

The upgraded site reopened earlier this month following a temporary construction closure. The project was made possible through a partnership with Foodstuffs South Island — which hosts dozens of EV charging sites at its New World, PAK’nSAVE and Four Square stores — and co-funding from EECA through the Low Emission Transport Fund (LETF). EECA’s investment enabled the site to be delivered two years ahead of schedule and at a larger scale.

Danusia Wypych, CEO of ChargeNet, says the Kaikōura upgrade is a strategic investment in the future of low-emissions transport:

“Kaikōura is a vital stop for tourism and local economy, and this upgraded site offers faster, more reliable charging for EV drivers on the move. Thanks to EECA and Foodstuffs, we’re delivering better accessibility and accelerating the shift to low-emission travel.”

“Our data shows high utilisation at New World Kaikōura, so the timing of this upgrade is ideal. We’re not only supporting local tourism but giving EV drivers the confidence to explore the region,” adds Wypych.

The Kaikōura project is part of a wider upgrade programme through ChargeNet’s long-standing partnership with Foodstuffs South Island, with new charging sites delivered over the past year at PAK’nSAVE Blenheim, New World Ashburton, New World Centre City (Dunedin), PAK’nSAVE Moorhouse, and New World Durham Street. More installations are planned for PAK’nSAVE Dunedin, New World Nelson City, and PAK’nSAVE Rolleston, which opens in 2026.

James and Kym Bishop, owner-operators of New World Kaikōura, say the new hub is a welcome addition:

“Kaikōura is a must-visit for travellers, and we’re seeing more EVs arriving every year. Upgrading the site helps ensure our town is connected to the growing EV tourism network, and having this site at our supermarket means customers can make the most of their time in Kaikōura by topping up on the essentials while charging their vehicle.”

With its coastal views and convenient location, the Kaikōura New World site is now one of the most scenic and strategic charging stops in the country.

EECA Group Manager – Delivery and Partnerships, Richard Briggs, says investments like this are helping build confidence in EV travel:

“This kind of expansion helps encourage the uptake of EVs by ensuring drivers can rest and recharge at convenient points along key routes, like that between Christchurch and Picton,” says Briggs.

“EECA’s support of projects like this has helped to make low emission travel a practical and attractive option for more New Zealanders and international visitors. I encourage local businesses, like those in Kaikōura, to make the most of the increase in visitors slowing down to take a break.”
