EV Charging Etiquette

EV Etiquette the Do’s and Don’ts

Public chargers are a shared space, so a little thought can go a long way. Follow these easy tips to keep charging fair, and hassle-free for everyone.

  1. All EVs are equal

Big, small, or plug-in hybrid. All EVs are welcome to use public chargers.

  2. Charging not parking

Only park in an EV charging space when you’re actively plugged in and charging.

  3. Be kind to non-EV drivers

If a petrol or diesel vehicle is parked in a charging spot by mistake, be polite. If you leave a note, make it friendly!

  4. When to unplug

Only unplug another vehicle if you have been given permission by the vehicle’s driver.
Some EVs can’t be unplugged until the owner returns, so always respect the vehicle and its driver.

  5. Monitor your charge

Use the ChargeNet app or notifications to track your charging session. PlugShare is also a safe way to communicate.
We recommend adding your mobile number to your ChargeNet account, and updating your SMS preferences, so we can send you a free text when your charging stops.

  6. Don’t set and forget

Charging slows down after 80%, so take what you need and keep things moving.
Head back to your EV before your session ends, and before any time limits run out, so others aren’t left waiting.

  7. Check for parking and charging limits

Some sites have time limits to keep things moving. Please don’t park illegally to reach a charger.

  8. It’s OK to check progress

If you’re waiting for a charger to become available, you can check the current session’s progress on the charger screen, or on the ChargeNet app.

  9. Look after stations, cables, and plugs

Treat chargers with care. Tuck cables away safely, and if your notice any damage let us know so we can fix it quickly.
