Are you gearing up for an adventure-filled road trip with your furry co-pilot? Whether you’re chasing sunsets, exploring hidden gems, or simply seeking a change of scenery, your four-legged friend is undoubtedly your most enthusiastic travel companion. We’ve collaborated with the EV community to curate a handpicked list of prime ChargeNet sites near parks, trails and beaches, allowing your four-legged friend to stretch their legs while your EV gets a boost.

Before visiting, we recommend that you do your own research to ensure the parks and beaches are suitable for off-leash play or whether your pet should remain on a leash.

  1. Northland

    • Houhora (Houhora Game Fishing Club) enjoy a stroll down Waterfront Road and take in the Houhora Harbour
    • Coopers Beach (Four Square) is a stones through from a stunning beach which is off-leash all year except between 15 December – 31 January (source)
    • Kerikeri (Butler Road)  with a coffee in hand and wander through the busy little kiwi town, frequently Best Small Town in New Zealand
    • Paihia (16 Williams Road) and wander through the main tourist town of the beautiful Bay of Islands
    • Opononi (Four Square)  grab an icecream from the Four Square and head across the road to Opononi beach. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for dolphins
    • Whangarei while not within walking distance, it would be remiss of us not to mention the brilliant Whangarei Public Dog Park on Dave Culham Drive
    • Dargaville (111 Totara Street, behind the BP) is directly across from Taha Awa Riverside Gardens which is home to a childrens playground, fernery building, sensual garden and meandering paths

  4. Bay of Plenty

    • Mt Maunganui (New World Basement) head towards Marine Parade and stop in at the incredibly dog friendly Tay Street Beach Cafe (NB. strict bylaws apply in Mt Maunganui)
    • Te Puke (New World) is a short walk to Lawrence Oliver Park, a dedicated dog park opening September 2023
    • Ngapuna (Ebbett Rotorua) is in close proximity to the Scion Tree Research Park, an off-leash dog park, sheltered from the elements by trees (bonus tip, if your dog loves swimming, there’s river that runs through the park)
    • Kawerau (New World) just a hop, skip, and a jump from Prideaux Park
    • Whakatane (iSite) and enjoy the Warren Cole Walk and Cycleway along the riverside trail
    • Murupara (Pine Drive Carpark)  and stroll over to the Murupara Domain

  5. Gisborne

    • Te Araroa (Rata Street) and take a short walk through the tiny coastal settlement to Te Araroa Beach (bonus tip, keep an eye out for Te Waha-o-Rerekohu, New Zealand’s oldest and largest pōhutukawa tree)
    • Tokomaru Bay (Waitangi St) is just a few paces away from the stunning 8kms of coastline at Tokomaru Bay
    • Tolaga Bay (Cook St) is not far from the beach Tolaga Bay
    • Gisborne (Gladstone Rd) enjoy the locals’ favourite place to stretch their legs in Gisborne city! Enjoy the ocean and riverside views as you follow the banks of the Taruheru and Turanganui Rivers

    • Taihape (New World) is a short walk from Mount Stewart Reserve
    • Bulls Te Matapihi (Bulls Community Centre) which offers charging for up to four vehicles offers a brilliant opportunity to enjoy all the pun-related (and real!) names of locations throughout the town
    • Foxton (War Memorial Hall) is near to the Awahou Board Walk or explore Foxton’s main street which boasts many picture-perfect historic buildings, antique and second-hand shops
    • Levin (New World) is close to the Levin Adventure Park and Thompson House Memorial Gardens

    • Lumsden (Four Square) is directly across from the Lumsden Town Centre Reserve and Playground
    • Riverton (Riverton) stop and explore the seaside town, fondly named the “Riviera of the South”
    • Invercargill (The Warehouse) is a quick saunter from Queens Park, the pride of Invercargill, a magnificent public park in the heart of the city
    • Fortrose (Fortrose Cafe) wander down to the beach and go shipwreck spotting at low tide and walk along the windswept, driftwood beach
